Food For Thought with Rita Tisdall

May 23 @ 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm

Rita Tisdall is a longtime educator and advocate for special needs education. After escaping from one of Irelands infamous Catholic “mother and baby homes” at the age of 17 and coming to Denmark, Rita eventually moved to Nepal where she spent 12 years living and working to improve the conditions around special needs education. Through this work, she encountered the harsh reality of the orphanage system in Nepal where 80% of “orphans” have a living relative who could take care of them. Many of the children are exploited for different reasons. Now, Rita is a board member and project coordinator for Alternatives to Separation (ATOS), an NGO working to keep Nepali families together and to create alternatives to the orphanage system.

On May 23rd, Rita talk about her work with ATOS – alternatives to separation, her experiences in Nepal, and will share the story of her experience in Ireland and her personal connection to the issue of family separation.

Food For Thought provides an exciting space for people from different backgrounds to share their life stories. We want to enable people to learn from and be inspired by each other’s life experiences through storytelling in a safe, stimulating and inclusive social environment. The idea stems from the belief that each one of us has unique life stories that are worth sharing and from which we can learn a lot. The idea also resonates with the saying: I tell my story, therefore, I am.

The event is family friendly and we also have entertainments and games for your kids!
