Crossing Borders Migrantour – Exploring Nørrebro Through Stories of Migration

27 August 2026

What happens when you explore Copenhagen through the stories of migration?

On Thursday, 27 August, we had the pleasure of guiding a Migrantour walk in Nørrebro with a group of first-year students from the University of Copenhagen’s Advanced Migration Studies programme.

Migrantour is a European initiative coordinated in Copenhagen by Crossing Borders. Through migrant-led walking tours, it creates spaces for intercultural dialogue, brings personal experiences of migration into public conversations, and encourages participants to look at the city from different perspectives.

During the walk, we explored Nørrebro through its migration histories, diverse communities, and everyday spaces. The participants were already interested in migration and cultures beyond Denmark, which led to many engaging questions and conversations along the way. Some shared stories from their own travels, including experiences from Jordan, while others expressed interest in learning Arabic or joining another Migrantour starting from Nørrebro Station.

The walk was not only about learning facts and histories. It was also an opportunity to exchange experiences and perspectives. Conversations touched on migration, integration, belonging, language, culture, and the ways in which people shape — and are shaped by — the places they live.

One of the highlights was the end of the tour at Folkets Hus, where we encountered a lively community atmosphere. There were already events taking place, including a fundraiser for Colombia, while fresh pizza was being prepared with ingredients collected from local farms. It was a fitting way to end a walk centred on community, diversity, and everyday encounters.

What makes Migrantour particularly meaningful is that migration is not presented simply as a topic to study. Instead, it becomes a human story connected to personal experiences, local communities, and the streets and places that make up the city.

We are happy to be part of an initiative that creates space for these encounters, conversations, and new perspectives, and we look forward to welcoming more people to explore Copenhagen through stories of migration and diversity.
