PARTNER Circus Zambia – Zambia

OBJECTIVES

Circus Zambia is a youthful and vibrant social circus company and creative hub that equips young people with circus and life skills while providing employment and educational opportunities in order for young people to reach their full potential and enable their communities to blossom. It is a non- profit social circus company from a slum called Chibolya in Lusaka, the capital city of Zambia. Chibolya is known for its lack of facilities, high level of poverty, drugs and criminality. Using circus, the company engages vulnerable youth ages 5-21 with a holistic training approach to serve their body, mind and soul. On an annual basis, Circus Zambia reaches over 5,000 young people by providing a safe space for youth regarding learning about women’s rights and equal gender values in the form of the workshops that involve creativity and circus performances. The workshops and presentations will be designed by educators, that are young people of age between 16-20 years old, coming from different vulnerable communities in Lusaka, and participants. Results of the workshops will be exhibited in form of the shows during the meetings with the groups from the other villages and important community events such as the Carnival. The public will also be reached through online platforms where the young change makers will learn how to use social media for advocacy in their own communities.

OUTCOME

Once active in weekly circus training, the children have access to the school support and funding, additional academic tutoring, mentoring, life skills coaching, as well as to a network of partner organizations which provide free medical services, scholarships, HIV/Aids support and expanded mentorship in their field of interest. Through these events the project will increase the knowledge on women’s rights and active citizenship; it will connect not only youth but also adults – parents of the participants and audience members to the topics relevant to it.
